Chianti is Tuscany’s best-known red – and savvy wine fans know the finest hail from Chianti Classico, the original (and hillier!) zone where conditions for crafting prime Sangiovese are perfect. Especially in the excellent 2013 vintage, rated 91 points by Wine Spectator for its “sleek, vibrant wines with bright, focused fruit flavors.”

We head to the historic estate of Castello di Meleto for your perfect taste. This medieval castle dates to 1256 and is just two miles down the road from the famous, 10th-century church, Pieve di Spaltenna (depicted on the label), which happens to be surrounded by some very special Sangiovese vines.

Winemaking duo Matteo Menicacci and Emiliano Falsini (who are no strangers to international acclaim) headed there to make this special Riserva, hand-harvesting and selecting only the best grapes and carefully aging the wine for a year in top-shelf oak barrels. Their dedication to quality really shows in the glass – this positively bursts with layers of tart red berries and cherry, alongside hints of white pepper and toasty oak. And (as most well-made Chianti is), it’s incredibly food-friendly and will make an impressive centerpiece for your next Italian feast.
