Our friend Franco ‘Mr. Sangiovese’ Bernabei makes some of Tuscany’s finest wines. Most famously, Franco’s the talent behind $100+ a bottle Fontodi Flaccianello, but he also crafts a host of delicious (great-value) selections for small, quality-focused estates. And we can’t wait for you to taste his acclaimed Chianti Classico.
For this special red, Franco teamed up with historic Villa Trasqua. This medieval winery lies along the ancient Via Francigena route between Canterbury and Rome, and the road’s weary pilgrims were among its first customers. Today, the estate boasts a new legion of thirsty fans – including top critic James Suckling, who awarded 91 points to this elegant Chianti Classico.
Boasting all the ripe-fruited charm of Tuscany’s excellent 2013 vintage, this bursts with ripe black cherry and subtle licorice notes. Barrel aging imparts classic hints of leather and earthy spice. As Suckling says, it’s “a tight and pretty red … very enjoyable.” And it’s even more enjoyable alongside hearty, Italian-inspired dishes.
You’ll want to place your order soon. Like all of Franco’s Tuscan treasures, this 91-point Chianti Classico is sure to sell quickly.
