The Objective: To find the 12 best wine buys in America. A panel of judges — chaired by best-selling wine writer Hugh Johnson — tasted more than 800 wines blind (to ensure impartiality). The winners were brought together in one special collection: The 2011 WSJwine Annual Dozen.
All the judges have had great Barbera before — but from northern Italy, not California’s Amador County. This surprise hit has 21 months in French oak and tons of blackberry, raspberry and bright cola flavor. “Lively, very fresh and quite delicious,” wrote judge and Master of Wine Justin Howard-Sneyd.
Taste for yourself — pairs deliciously with Italian-inspired meals (think sausage lasagne or osso buco) and firm cheeses like Parmesan, Romano or cheddar.
