“Austrian whites should be go-to wines for discerning wine lovers who seek high and consistent quality at down-to-earth prices,” writes Wine Spectator. Take their word for it – Austrian wines are seriously good buys. If you’ve yet to partake, the country’s star white, Grüner Veltliner (or “Grü-Vee,” as it’s nicknamed by its growing fan base), is a perfect place to start.
This exciting find is from the Nastl family, who’ve made wine for centuries (dating to 1656). National awards and top billing in Austrian wine publications speak to the quality of their work – though we think it’ll be apparent at first sip. Their estate is in Langenlois, in the premium Kamptal region, where Grüner Veltliner thrives in minerally soil. Backed by more than 350 years of wine know-how, two generations run the vineyards and cellar. “Our wines are as colorful and varied as the characters of our family members,” says proprietor Günter Nastl, who took the reins from his father in 1978.
With its crisp acidity, lively peppery and mineral notes, and diverse range of styles, Grüner Veltliner is one of the food-friendliest wines around (one reason why it’s a wine-list darling for many top sommeliers). The ripe, tropical-fruit flavors, classic white pepper tones, and crisp, citrusy finish you’ll enjoy here will pair beautifully with an array of cheeses, from firm Gouda to creamy Brie. We also love this stylish white with fresh seafood, especially sushi.
