Gómez Cruzado is a tiny Rioja boutique, nestled among world-famous bodegas like R. López de Heredia, Roda, and Riojanas. It’s something of a local secret, so its wines rarely leave the area. But thanks to the efforts of our intrepid woman on the ground, Beth Willard, we’re now good friends with them – and so are you.
Their Reserva is not something you want to miss. In just a few short vintages, this wine's won trophies, 90+ point scores galore, and even bested Wine Spectator’s No. 1 wine of 2013 at the Wines from Spain Awards. The just-landed 2011 (an officially excellent vintage in Rioja) is every bit as impressive, with 91 points from Tim Atkin's 2018 Rioja Report. He calls it “a focused, dense, ambitious red” that will age beautifully through 2026. (Wecall it a wine you've got to try.)
Made with carefully hand-harvested Tempranillo and aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months, this is soft, mellow and very food-friendly. Try it with everything from vegetarian stews to grilled meats or your favorite charcuterie.
