Bordeaux’s storied Saint-Emilion region produces some of the world’s finest Merlot-based wines. The top bottlings can sell for thousands of dollars, but if you know where to look, you can find great quality for a lot less. Case in point: this acclaimed Grand Cru.
It’s a special cuvée from Guillaume Clemenceau’s Château Vieux Verdot. Epigone is the French word for an artist’s successor, and he crafted it as an homage to his father and winemaking mentor. Guillaume and his team selected hand-harvested, estate-grown parcels of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The grapes thrived during the fantastic 2014 vintage, which produced “gorgeous wines at fair prices … ideal for consumers who buy wines to actually drink them,” says expert Antonio Galloni. Back in the winery, Guillame treated the wine to 12 months’ aging in new oak barriques.
Guilluame’s efforts earned Epigone a gold medal from the Concours de Grands Vins de France Mâcon – which would definitely make his father proud. Elegant and balanced, this silky Grand Cru overflows with vibrant, red-fruit flavors plus toasty spice notes. A delightful match for creamy mushroom risotto, grilled duck topped with roasted figs, and more.
