The sunny southern Rhône is a top spot for fantastic values. This is one of our coolest recent finds, from a third-generation family domaine nestled in the gorgeous countryside between the Cévennes mountains and Provence. It caught the attention of all of its neighbors when it won a gold medal at the competitive regional show in Avignon. When we tasted it, we were captivated too, and we think you'll feel the same!
The Rhône Valley's tiny Duché d'Uzès officially became an appellation in 2012, but wines have been crafted here since the 6th century BC, with quality really taking off in the Middle Ages. Then and now, the region's wines are almost all blends, famed for their deep color.
Domaine Villessèche is a classic marriage of Grenache and Syrah. Sun-loving Grenache contributes bright, red-fruit aromas and flavors, with Syrah – the great grape behind Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie in the northern Rhône – adding deep color plus trademark black pepper and black olive nuances.
One of the many cool things about Rhône wines is the trademark regional crests embossed on the bottle (a throwback to the Middle Ages) – which make an eye-catching addition to any dinner party. This crowd-pleaser is one to serve if roasted duck, pork, or lamb's on the menu. The bright, spicy red-fruit flavors will work particularly well with fruit-based sauces.
