Always one of the best wines from the Côtes de Blaye.”
We’re not going to argue with top critic Robert Parker on that assertion. He’s talking about Château Gigault, whose rich, Merlot-based reds are often hailed as vintage “sleepers” (aka, under-the-radar finds that over-deliver on flavor and value). The dynamic duo behind this exciting find is none other than Christophe Reboul-Salze and Stephane Derenoncourt (the renowned Right Bank talent responsible for La Mondotte, Pavie-Macquin and Canon La Gaffelière).
Something else not to argue with? The amazing wines that are emerging from the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux region. Parker wrote that Blaye represents “undeniable quality and value.” And thanks to the 2014 vintage (“one to watch,” according to Decanter’s Bordeaux expert, Steven Spurrier), the grapes ripened beautifully – in fact, it’s considered one of the best vintages of the last several years. In the glass, look forward to classic aromas of forest floor, dark berry fruits and hints of cedar. The palate is smooth and well structured, with hints of plum, black currant and toasty oak.
Two hugely talented winemakers … a region that’s ripe for discovery … a stellar year … this really is a must-taste for Bordeaux fans. Pick yourself up a few bottles (or more – at this price, you can’t lose) and you’ll be drinking like a real insider. Cheers!
