Baron de Barbon is a second label from Bodegas Muriel in the Rioja region of Spain (full name of the wine is Bodegas Muriel Baron de Barbon). Bodegas Muriel was founded in 1986 by winemaker Julián Murúa in a continuation of the business the family founded in 1926. The winery is located at the heart of the Rioja Alavesa, specializing in traditional approaches to white and red Rioja style wines. Baron de Barbon was created as a less expensive and accessible offshoot of the Bodegas Muriel signature wines.
This is very much in the traditional mode of Rioja, as the old-fashioned label signifies: a big, serious wine, with plenty of aging potential, but also fine to drink now. Full-bodied, intense black fruits, with some decent spice and vanilla undertones from the oak aging; a leg of lamb or big chicken paella would be in order.
