2016 was yet another stellar vintage in California – especially for Napa. So imagine our excitement when our California wine maven, Clare Tooley, secured dibs on this spectacular Pinot Noir.
The grapes come from the fifth-generation Miller family – owners of some of the Central Coast’s most sought-after and expensive vineyard plots. They also own sites in the coolest pockets of Napa, where chilly breezes from the San Pablo Bay circulate up the hillsides and impart a lovely freshness to the grapes. After a cool, evening harvest, Richard Shelton took over in the cellar. He gave the “juice” a long, cold soak to draw out deep color and rich flavors, then aged the wine in French oak barrels for six months to add just the right amount of toasty complexity to the wine before bottling.
It’s pure Pinot pleasure in the glass. On the nose, look forward to ripe notes of cranberry, strawberry and pomegranate edged by cinnamon, black pepper and clover. The palate is rounded and plush, with bright red cherry, raspberry, and classic cola flavors framing a smooth, elegant finish.
It’s also a classic match for roasted poultry or meaty fish. And, makes a stellar aperitif for guests who prefer red wine. (If you’re a chocolate lover, Clare recommends a square of dark chocolate for dessert – or a midday treat!)
